Learn. Love. Lead.
In our ever-changing and increasingly global society, it is essential that today’s students embark on the rewarding journey of learning a second language. When students learn a second language, they are exposed to the customs and ways of life of other cultures. In turn, they expand their views and perceptions of the world, as well as their own culture. Our goal is to create a comfortable and positive learning environment that encourages and produces life-long learners of Spanish who have the skills and interest to use the language to enrich their lives.
All students in the Elementary School are exposed to the Spanish curriculum. For students Kindergarten through 6th grade, their curriculum focuses on the acquisition of broad vocabulary as the students begin to learn basic words, expressions and basic grammar structures.
Our 7th grade Spanish program is considered the first half of Spanish I and is an introduction to the basics of the Spanish language and culture. The course begins with the basics of the language, such as the alphabet and pronunciation, and progresses towards more complex conversation and grammar structures. Vocabulary units include greetings and basic conversation phrases, calendar words, personality and characteristic traits, school courses, supplies, descriptions, clothing, colors and classroom activities. Grammar concepts studied include definite and indefinite articles, number and adjective agreement, the verb "ser", informal and formal structures, regular "–AR" verbs in the present tense, and the verbs "ir", "dar" and "estar". By the end of the school year, students will have the basic building blocks for communication and further study in 8th grade.
Our 8th grade Spanish program is considered the second half of Spanish I and is a deeper study of Spanish vocabulary and grammar concepts. Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to explore the food, music, traditions and customs of those who speak Spanish. Vocabulary units include restaurant and food, home and family, sports, health and medical, and seasonal weather and activities. Grammar concepts studied include regular "–ER" and "–IR" verbs in the present tense, the verb "tener", possessive adjectives, stem-changing verbs in the present tense, verbs like "gustar", "interesar" and "aburrir", and uses of "ser" versus "estar". By the end of the school year, students will have the knowledge and confidence to be successful in Spanish II in high school.
