The following article will be published in the April edition of Saginaw Township Living magazine.
Nouvel Catholic Central wrapped up its winter sports season recently. Panthers, from elementary students to high school seniors, are given the opportunity to play a variety of sports. High school Panthers are offered winter sports, including bowling, basketball, hockey and powerlifting, allowing them to participate in the sports they enjoy. It’s always sad when a season comes to an end but there was much to celebrate and be proud of this year.
Nouvel provides girls and boys an opportunity to join the varsity bowling team and has enjoyed a full roster the last few years. The boys team worked this year on rebuilding after graduating quite a few bowlers, including a Mr. Bowler and two-time State Champion.
The girls team had quite a special year. Coached by Meredith Adelman, the girls team had a good season and was able to win 3 matches as a team for the first time in years. They began their season with a 2-0 start, which marked a first in the girls program. Coach Adelman shared, “There was lots of improvement this year and everyone played well as a team.”
One of Nouvel's biggest winter sports is boys basketball, which had a spectacular season. The team was made up of 11 student-athletes and welcomed 2 freshmen. The team beat the state’s 4th ranked Division 4 team, Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart, 55-50, to claim the 2025-26 District 111 Championship. They sadly lost in regionals against the defending State Champion Tri-unity Christian but nonetheless celebrated a great season!
Girls basketball bounced back this year after seeing quite a few players graduate last year, with more younger players than ever going out for the teams. Under Coach Aston Cooper, they improved consistently over the season and beat Bay City All Saints 40-37 in overtime, in the first round of districts. With graduating just one senior on the Varsity team, we look forward to seeing what next year holds. Senior Macey Hausbeck commented that, “Playing a great game against Midland Calvary Baptist was a highlight of the season. The team came together and agreed that winning the game against Bay City All Saints was a big moment for them.”
Panthers can also play hockey with the FNV Griffins hockey team. It is a co-op between Nouvel and a few other schools in the area. The team won the Regional Championship this year and advanced to the MHSAA Quarterfinals. We congratulate all the players on a record season and look forward to the momentum from this season.
Powerlifting, a club started by senior Christian Lopez, has grown quickly in participation and results for the Panthers. The sport is considered a club but taken just as seriously as any other varsity and junior varsity sport. There were quite a few highlights to celebrate this season. This year, they welcomed 4 new freshman members onto the team. At the powerlifting regional meet, quite a few finished first in their weight classes or in the super powerlifting category. In total 4 JV members qualified and competed at States, including Brayden Guldenzoph, Jaxson Hall, Xavier Martinez and Sam Shaheen. Christian Lopez qualified for States again this year and finished 7th at the MHSPLA Powerlifting State Meet. Congratulations to each of them.
With winter sports ending, the Panthers roll right into the spring season. Nouvel’s student-athletes enjoy incredible opportunities to shine in the classroom, on the court and as leaders in their community. They receive the benefit of smaller class sizes and individualized attention. For more information on Nouvel athletics, please visit www.NouvelCatholic.org/Explore
