Our Philosophy:

Young Fives is a year of growth and discovery for children who need additional time for development and maturity before entering Kindergarten. In addition to a strong academic program, Young Fives offers children an opportunity to foster their social and emotional development. Individual, small group, and large group work are incorporated in each day through hands-on activities to best meet the needs of all of the children. Our young five students must be 5 years old by December 31.

Program Hours:

Monday through Friday

  • Half Day: 7:50am-11am
  • Full Day: 7:50am-3:15pm

Goals of the Daily Program:

Each day, the Young Fives students learn about their Catholic faith through daily prayer, Bible stories, and learning to be more like Jesus. Students expand their knowledge of the world around them through a strong academic program, which includes religion, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and handwriting. Students also learn important social skills, including listening, following directions, self-control, and cooperation with others.

Young Fives Curriculum:

The Stories of God’s Love (Kindergarten edition) and the Seeds (Preschool edition) programs are used to teach students about Bible stories, present life lessons connected to Scripture, and seasonal celebrations in the Church year.

Language Arts

The SRA Imagine It (Pre-K edition) Program is used to give students a solid foundation in different genres of literature, oral language development, letter and sound identification, and writing skills. Small group work is also done based on the interests, abilities, and needs of the children.

The Investigations (Kindergarten edition) Program is used to give students a solid foundation in numbers and operations, measurement, geometry, patterns and functions, and data analysis. These skills are taught, reinforced, and extended through centers, manipulatives, and other hands-on experiences.

Science and Social Studies

The Scholastic Let’s Find Out (Kindergarten level) Program is used to introduce students to the world around them. Various science and social studies concepts are covered throughout the year with connections to language arts and math.

The Handwriting Without Tears (Kindergarten level) Program is introduced to expose students to proper upper case and lower case letter formation.

Enrichment Opportunities:

Due to the fact that some students leave at lunch time, the core academic lessons take place in the morning and less formal instruction takes place in the afternoon. The afternoon is a time to reinforce what was learned during the morning through individual or small group work, learning centers, and free play time.

Other enrichment opportunities include art, music, gym, library, computer, and Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, field trips, assemblies, classroom speakers, and cooking activities.

Extended School:

  • After school Latch Key from 3:15 to 6:00pm.
  • Engineering for Kids (ask our school for session days and times or go to engineeringforkids.com)

A high and exhilarating task awaits you: that of becoming men and women capable of solidarity, peace and love of life, with respect for everyone.
